Adulting 101 Checklist: 60 essential life skills

The stuff school skipped — money, home, health, career, and life admin — in one printable checklist. Bookmark it, share it, or tick off one item a week and you'll be dangerously competent by next year.

Money & finance

The stuff that stops you from waking up at 3 a.m. worrying about overdraft fees.

  • Open a checking and a high-yield savings account at different banks.
  • Build a starter emergency fund of $1,000, then work toward 3 months of expenses.
  • Set up automatic transfers to savings on payday.
  • Track every dollar for one month to see where it actually goes.
  • Understand your paycheck: gross vs. net, federal, state, FICA, 401(k).
  • Check your credit report free at annualcreditreport.com.
  • Get one credit card, pay it off in full every month.
  • File your taxes on time — even if you can't pay.
  • Contribute at least enough to your 401(k) to get the full employer match.
  • Open a Roth IRA and set up $50/month auto-invest into an index fund.
  • Know the difference between a debit card, credit card, and BNPL.
  • Read every bill for errors before paying it.

Home & living

Renting, cooking, cleaning, and not accidentally flooding your apartment.

  • Read a lease front to back before signing — every clause matters.
  • Document apartment condition with photos on move-in day.
  • Get renter's insurance (usually $10–15/month).
  • Know how to shut off the water main in an emergency.
  • Learn to unclog a drain, reset a breaker, and change a lightbulb safely.
  • Cook 5 cheap meals from scratch — pasta, stir fry, eggs, beans and rice, sheet-pan chicken.
  • Do laundry without shrinking anything — read the tag.
  • Set a weekly cleaning routine (kitchen, bathroom, floors, sheets).
  • Keep a basic toolkit: screwdriver, hammer, tape measure, level, pliers.
  • Build a starter pantry so you're never stuck ordering DoorDash.
  • Change your smoke-detector batteries every year.
  • Set up utilities and internet in your own name.

Health & wellness

Doctors, meds, sleep, therapy — the boring stuff that keeps you alive.

  • Find a primary care doctor and book an annual physical.
  • Find a dentist and go twice a year.
  • Know your health insurance: deductible, copay, out-of-pocket max, in-network.
  • Keep a running list of your prescriptions, dosages, and allergies.
  • Learn basic first aid and CPR.
  • Sleep 7–9 hours. Non-negotiable.
  • Move your body 3x a week — walking counts.
  • Get therapy before you think you need it.
  • Drink water before coffee in the morning.
  • Have a doctor you can text for questions, or use a telehealth service.
  • Know when to go to urgent care vs. the ER.
  • Keep an updated list of emergency contacts in your phone under "ICE".

Career & work

Getting hired, getting paid what you're worth, and not getting stuck.

  • Have a one-page resume, updated quarterly.
  • Have a LinkedIn profile with a real headshot and a clear headline.
  • Practice answering "tell me about yourself" out loud.
  • Negotiate every job offer — always ask for more.
  • Understand your benefits: PTO, 401(k), health insurance, HSA, stock.
  • Track your wins monthly for reviews and future resumes.
  • Send a thank-you email within 24 hours of every interview.
  • Learn to write a clear professional email in under 5 sentences.
  • Know your company's remote/PTO policy in writing before you need it.
  • Build a "quit fund" of 3 months' expenses — leverage matters.
  • Say no to meetings that could be emails.
  • Keep a list of 5 people you'd call for a job reference.

Life admin & relationships

The paperwork, boundaries, and social skills nobody teaches you.

  • Keep your ID, passport, Social Security card, and birth certificate in one safe spot.
  • Register to vote and know your polling place.
  • Set up a password manager and use unique passwords.
  • Turn on 2-factor auth on email, bank, and social accounts.
  • Back up your phone and laptop automatically.
  • Learn to say no without a long explanation.
  • Send a birthday text to the people who matter.
  • Write a short will and pick a healthcare proxy — even at 25.
  • RSVP to invitations within 48 hours.
  • Own one interview-ready outfit and one funeral-ready outfit.
  • Learn how to change a tire, jump a car, and check your oil.
  • Practice one hard conversation this month you've been avoiding.

Turn this into a plan

Don't try to do all 60 at once. Pick 3 items this week, add them to your planner, and keep going. In a year, you're a completely different adult.
