The guide

01

The accounts you actually need

A simple three-account structure covers almost everyone.

  • Checking — bills and daily spending.
  • High-yield savings — emergency fund, earning real interest.
  • A second savings 'bucket' — a named goal like a security deposit or a car.
02

Fees to refuse

Monthly maintenance fees, overdraft fees, and out-of-network ATM fees are all avoidable. Plenty of credit unions and online banks charge none of them — switching takes an afternoon.

03

How your money moves

Direct deposit and ACH transfers take one to three business days. Debit card holds can appear and disappear. Never assume a pending deposit is spendable.

04

FDIC and NCUA insurance

Deposits are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per institution. Confirm the coverage before parking money at an app you haven't heard of.

Remember this

  • Pick a bank with no monthly fee and no overdraft fee.
  • Keep bill money and savings in separate accounts.
  • Turn on balance alerts instead of overdraft 'protection'.
