Budgeting Basics

Most budgets fail because they are too detailed to maintain. A budget only needs to answer one question: what is safe to spend today?

The guide

01

Start with take-home pay

Budget the amount that actually lands in your account, after taxes and deductions. If your income varies, use your lowest month from the past year as the baseline.

02

The 50 / 30 / 20 frame

A starting split, not a rule. Adjust the percentages to your rent, but keep the three buckets.

  • 50% needs — rent, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments.
  • 30% wants — dining, subscriptions, travel, hobbies.
  • 20% future — emergency fund, debt payoff above the minimum, investing.
03

Automate the hard part

Willpower is a bad savings plan. Schedule transfers for the day after payday so the future bucket leaves before you can spend it.

04

Build the emergency fund in stages

One month of expenses first — that alone stops most credit card debt from ever starting. Then work toward three to six months in a high-yield savings account kept separate from checking.

Remember this

  • Track three numbers: income, fixed costs, and what's left.
  • Automate savings on payday.
  • Review once a month for ten minutes, not daily.
